Legend has it that salt water taffy was invented in 1883 by an Atlantic City candy shop owner whose boardwalk store flooded with salt water after a big storm. When a customer walked into the store and asked for taffy, the shopkeep sarcastically referred to it as “salt water taffy.” The name caught on and, ever since then, salt water taffy has been sold on the New Jersey Boardwalk and around the globe. Fun fact: Salt Water Taffy doesn't actually contain any salt water.
